Why should you unlock your iPhone 4s?

There are many benefits to having your iPhone 4s unlocked so you can use it on a network of your choice.
Unlocking your iPhone 4s allows you to move to a cheaper network tariff. Simply insert the SIM card of the network of your choice into the unlocked 4s and take advantage of the cheaper rates. It is not just a cheaper rate that changing network can mean for you however: coverage issues are also dependent on networks, so changing them might give you better reception on your unlocked iPhone 4s in your area.

An unlocked 4s can also sell for more money than one that is locked to a network, as a buyer can use the SIM card and network of their choice with the second-hand 4s handset. If you see what happens to the price of a used handset on the release of a new iPhone model, then it makes sense to preserve as much value as you can by getting it unlocked before you sell it on.

And if you’re fond of travel around Europe or further afield, then an unlocked iPhone will allow you to take your 4s with you and use foreign networks to avoid any roaming charges.

It is also the case that having an unlocked iPhone 4s will allow you to take advantage of any good deals that are on the market, as you can jump onto networks that offer such incentives such as free minutes and texts. The money saved is the obvious advantage here, though to make serious savings users do have to be quite proactive in their bargain hunts, which might not be for everybody.

How do I know if my iPhone 4s is locked?

When you buy a second hand iPhone 4s it is always better to have it unlocked so you can use it on your preferred network. To check the status of the handset and to see if it is locked/unlocked, then simply go to SETTINGS > MOBILE > MOBILE DATA NETWORK. If the iPhone 4s is locked, then the last of those options won’t appear.

But the best method to see if your iPhone 4s is unlocked already is simply to substitute its original SIM card for one of your own from a different network. If you can use it successfully on restarting the handset, then your iPhone 4s is already unlocked. If the iPhone 4s is still locked, it will say: “SIM not valid,” on the display.

What steps should I take before I unlock my iPhone 4s?

At Unlock, we advise that everyone takes the following actions before they order an unlock service from us (or anyone else!) for their iPhone 4s.

Firstly, check if your iPhone 4s is already unlocked by the methods outlined above. Many people presume their handsets are locked automatically, yet this isn’t always so. Secondly, (and if the iPhone 4s is locked), then it is recommended that you back up all the handset’s data - photos, videos, and contacts etc. This can be done through iTunes and the iCloud. Once that is done then you can find the iPhone 4s IMEI number (see our section on how to do this, below). After that, and if you are not sure, then you can verify the model of the iPhone in your possession by checking the back cover of your iPhone and seeing the A1*** identification near the bottom. The iPhone 4s should be one of the following: A1431, A1387, A1387.

The final step you should take before unlocking your iPhone 4s is to ensure that the iPhone isn’t blacklisted. Only carriers and networks can blacklist an iPhone 4s so you will need to check it with them to confirm the status of the iPhone. If the 4s handset is blacklisted, then we at Unlock my iPhone can’t help you unlock it, I’m afraid.

How do I tell if my iPhone 4s is blacklisted or ‘bricked’ prior to unlocking?

iPhones that are lost or stolen and have been reported as such by their original owner are blacklisted to prevent them being used. You should always check before you purchase a second-hand iPhone 4s whether this is the case and there are generally two ways of doing this.

The first way is to insert a SIM card from the same network that the iPhone was originally locked to. If it works, it shouldn’t be blacklisted. The second way is to use a third-party checking service, and we would refer you to Checkmend, a useful website for determining the status of iPhone handsets. It isn’t free however, and each check costs £1.99. Still, if it saves you spending £40 on a useless handset that has been bricked by its network, then it is money well spent. So if you buy a second hand iPhone 4s then please ask the seller for the IMEI first and do the check!

Again, it is worth noting here that if your handset is blacklisted, then we cannot unlock your iPhone 4s.

Am I allowed to unlock my iPhone 4s? Is unlocking a 4s legal?

Unlocking an iPhone 4s is NOT illegal in any way, so long as you own the handset (so you have finished paying off your contract or you purchased the iPhone 4s outright). If you are still in the process of paying off the contract, then we would advise that you check with your carrier first to be sure of where you stand.

How do I find my iPhone 4s’s IMEI number to begin the unlocking process?

To unlock your iPhone 4s, you will need to provide us with the IMEI number. Every phone and mobile broadband device has a 15 digit IMEI number that us unique to that handset. To find the IMEI, simply take your iPhone 4s and dial the following (without needing to press ‘call’):

The iPhone’s IMEI will then be displayed.

If this doesn’t work, then all is not lost. You can still find the IMEI on an iPhone 4s by simply looking at the back cover. Finally, if that’s obscured or scratched beyond recognition, then open the iPhone 4s and go into SETTINGS > GENERAL > ABOUT > IMEI.

Another way to find the IMEI for your iPhone 4s is via connecting it to iTunes via your PC or Mac. Go to DEVICES > YOUR IPHONE > SUMMARY and the IMEI should be displayed.

Common misconceptions about unlocking the iPhone 4s.

We often receive emails off people who ask us when they can expect to receive their unlock code after purchasing our services to unlock their iPhone 4s. We DO NOT SEND UNLOCK CODES OUT as our unlock procedure does not work in this way: we unlock your iPhone 4s at IMEI level on Apple’s database. Once that is confirmed, you will receive an email confirmation from us telling you how to complete the process via iTunes with your new SIM card.

Sometimes, people confuse our unlocking service for the iPhone 4s with what is called Jailbreaking. This process is very different to an IMEI unlock and is actually based around removing the software restrictions on Apple’s iOS systems. The legal basis of this is shaky as it can crossover into Copyright infringement, depending on how the iPhone is used later on, but it is something that we at unlock do not offer, and we never have. Messing around with the iOS of an iPhone 4s attempting a Jailbreak can leave the unit open to exploitation by third parties, and will obviously void your warranty.

What other networks can you unlock for my iPhone 4s?

We can actually unlock a number of networks for the iPhone 4s, but we offer the best service on UK networks. If you have a particular network that you do want us to unlock, (UK, European, or beyond) please contact us and we’ll get back to you with a quote and estimated time.

Unlocking the iPhone 4s: Some interesting facts about the handset.

The launch announcement of the iPhone 4s was overshadowed by the death of tech visionary Steve Jobs the following day, on October 05th, 2011. Having led and developed Apple into the powerhouse it is today, the passing of the company’s co-founder imbued the release of the iPhone 4s with a near spiritual symbolism. With a million handsets being sold in the first twenty-four hours of release, and a further four million over the next four days, sales of the iPhone 4s surpassed its predecessor.

The iPhone 4s was also the first that featured the debut of Siri, the intelligent personal assistant that would go on to be included in all subsequent iPhone handsets. Although similar in design to the iPhone 4, the new handset did include some quite powerful upgrades: the camera allows for 8 megapixel photographs, and can record video of up to 30 frames per second - a substantial upgrade on the iPhone 4 handset. The graphics too got a significant boost from the dual-core processor, allowing for seven times faster graphics than the iPhone 4! (This was confirmed by an ‘expert’ demonstration in the form of Epic Games President Mike Capps, who previewed Infinity Blade II on the iPhone 4s at an Apple event just a few days prior to launch. Famously, he made the comparison between the graphics on the iPhone 4s and Microsoft’s X-Box 360, as Infinity Blade II used the same graphics engine as Gears of War 3).

Do you use Siri on your iPhone 4s? Then make sure to ask her a few of these questions:

1. In an obvious dig at Google’s Project Glass, try asking Siri: “Ok, Glass.” I don’t think she appreciates the competition!

2. If you ask her to “stop spying,” then you might get a sinister answer - the rise of the machines is closer than we think!

3. If you are feeling flirtatious, then you might want to ask Siri to “talk dirty to me.” (Of course, why you are talking that way to a machine does raise its own questions!)

4. Siri is most complementary about the iPhone 4s too. Ask her “what is the best phone?” and she will plug Apple’s handset to the Nth degree!

Unlocking the iPhone 4s. A Case Study.

Unlocking the iPhone 4s in support of a charity dash to Mongolia!

With a team of 4 intrepid individuals, a drive from the heart of the European Union to the wondrous and far off city of Ulaanbaatar sounded like an exciting adventure for brave youngsters James, Mark, Claire and Hannah, who had all just finished their studies at university and were looking for a once in a lifetime trip to conclude their years of hard work.

Raising money over several months, they purchased a second hand (and left hand drive!) 4x4 to use as their means of transportation, with the aim being that it would be given away at the end of the trip for use in Mongolia. All four of them took courses and training in mechanics and first aid, to prepare themselves for any eventuality.

As they poured over maps and Lonely Planet guides to plan their trip south of the Caspian, as they pondered currency rates and plotted waypoints and marked points of interest to stop off and see (such as the ‘Gate to Hell’ in the heart of the Kara-Kum Desert), they also realised they would need reliable communications. And more importantly, those communications would have to work across national boundaries and be able to work on different networks.

Knowing that the adventure would likely see them enduring certain hardships, they sensibly decided to buy second hand iPhone 4s handsets, thinking that these units had enough ‘smartness’ to be useful, and were cheap enough not to become too precious about.

Using Unlock my iPhone to free their second hand iPhone 4s handsets from their networks (one was Vodafone, two were O2, and the final one was Three), they were set to go on their adventure across more than a dozen different countries, across mountains, forests, deserts, and enduring all types of weather.

The 4x4 took all the hardship in stoic fashion, and amongst the handsets there was one iPhone 4s fatality: when changing a tyre in central Asia, Hannah was so concentrated she forget the presence of her phone in her back pocket. When she sat back on a hard rock, the iPhone 4s came off worse!

Nonetheless, it sounds like an adventure to be proud of, and one in which they will be talking about for the rest of their lives. Well done!
